I’ll let Keillor wax brilliant for this annual day of tribute to mothers.
My only problem with the holiday is the idea of brunch. At church I witness throngs of people mingling around coffee pots and donut boxes, consuming breakfast fare. Then they say they are going to have brunch. Isn’t that just called lunch?

Room at the Inn
This is a story occurred a few years ago. My aunt promises that it is true and, generally, free of excessive embellishment.
I have an aunt and uncle who live in Louisville, Kentucky. One December, my aunt ordered a nativity scene of clay figurines to adorn her fireplace’s mantle. When the package arrived she sorted through [...]

Eve, the Apple, and the New Year
New Year’s Eve is the only Eve that trumps the day to follow. Christmas Eve is nice and pleasant, but it, nonetheless, anticipates a bigger day. Not so with December 31. What better time to break a New Year’s Resolution than before the New Year begins?
People who lament habits of eating too much, drinking too [...]

Christmas Theology: Our Little Town
There is a tension between small towns and big cities. Iowan dairy farmers stare hopelessly at the machine that dispenses rail passes in Grand Central Station. Seattle-born artists hire out the job of replacing the bag of their vacuum cleaner. Savvy is often non-transferable. But that does not mean that savvy is absent from the [...]

Christmas Theology: Virgin Birth Records

An Exchange We Can Believe In
Please bring a $7 gift to exchange. These words appear on an invitation for a Christmas Party I will attend on Tuesday. As of Monday evening, I was undecided on what I would bring. Since the exchange would probably be Dirty Santa-style, it didn’t do much good to consider any particular recipient. Further, it is [...]

A Life of Pie
Each evening as I get home, I am greeted by a shimmering pumpkin pie resting on the counter. I glance at the pie quickly before reaching into the drawer to secure a knife and fork. No plate will be necessary. Andrea gets home later. This will suffice as an appetizer for dinner. But what about [...]

Happy 4th of July
Happy Independence Day to all. This is a wonderful holiday that gives us all a chance to reflect on that which we are truly thankful for. Among such things are year end model cars, furniture with 18 months same as cash financing, and cheap mattresses. Therefore we have been pinned down as people who love [...]

Saint Patrick’s Day
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all, even for those of us who chose to attend work and stay sober. It does seem fair to say that if Sweetest Day is a Hallmark Holiday, then certainly St. Patrick’s Day is a Heineken Holiday. But do not fear, there are plenty of other festivities to share for [...]

Best of Thanksgiving
The most blessed season is upon us. We can recline, reflect, and reminisce about days long past. Days that were primarily spent reclining, reflecting, and reminiscing. But these sorts of occasions give us a day off to think of what we are grateful for. So Time in My Mind thinks these should be listed, all [...]
